When the Audience Won't Talk: How to Conduct Qualitative Research in the UAE Market

Standard research tools fail with migrant and blue-collar audiences in the UAE. Here's how we actually reach them — and get honest answers.

The UAE looks like a straightforward market to research. High levels of digitalisation, developed infrastructure, plenty of people willing to speak English. It seems easy enough to reach the right audience: run an online survey, hire a local agency, conduct a few interviews over Zoom, or walk up to customers in person.

In practice, it works very differently.

The UAE is a highly segmented market. Dozens of nationalities live and work here, each with different cultural codes, different levels of trust towards researchers, and entirely different behavioural patterns. Many target audiences — particularly among migrant workers employed in services, construction, and domestic work — are virtually inaccessible through standard research tools. They don't sit in panels. They don't respond to unfamiliar links. And they almost never speak honestly with people they don't trust. If you're entering the UAE market and need to understand the behaviour of exactly these people, you'll face a challenge for which standard tools simply don't work.

In this article, I describe the approach we developed at Vinden.one for conducting qualitative research with hard-to-reach audiences — from whom you need honest answers, not socially desirable ones.

Why Standard Recruitment Channels Don't Work Here

Research agencies typically recruit respondents through ready-made panels — databases of people who participate in surveys periodically in exchange for an incentive. It's convenient, fast, and predictable in terms of timing.

The problem is that these databases work poorly for specific audiences with strict selection criteria: a particular type of employment, a specific income level, behavioural patterns that need to be verified. Panel respondents often become "professionalised" — they learn to give answers they think the researcher wants to hear. And they will almost never give you access to real behavioural details, especially when the topic is sensitive.

For projects where you need real people with real experience, we build recruitment in a fundamentally different way: not through databases, but through lived environments.

Three-Layer Recruitment: Environment Over Lists

When the audience is specific and hard to reach, we work in parallel across several environments — each providing its own type of access and its own verification logic.

The work environment is the primary and most reliable channel. We approach employers, entrepreneurs, and managers who have people with the right profile on their teams. An important nuance: the employer helps only with the initial contact — the introduction. All subsequent work — screening, verification, interviews — is conducted independently by the research team. This is essential for eliminating the "authority presence" effect.

The job-seeking environment provides scale and allows us to work with verified profiles. We use hiring platforms — from specialised ones for specific worker categories to broad job marketplaces. The initial contact happens in the context of hiring, not research: this reduces wariness and allows for preliminary checking before the person even knows we're researchers. This is followed by a full screening conversation with cross-checks between profile data, the hiring-context conversation, and screening responses.

The everyday life environment is the most labour-intensive but critically important channel for behavioural validation. These are the places where our target audience is physically present: specific venues, everyday service points, community spaces. Here we work through live offline contact via a native field interviewer who is visually and culturally close to the target audience. A short conversation on the spot — followed by an invitation to a full interview.

Across all three channels, we apply a controlled snowball: each respondent can refer no more than one or two contacts, and every referral goes through the full screening process on equal terms with primary recruits. This provides access to more closed segments of the audience who don't surface through public channels at all. However, the limits here matter: without proper controls, your entire sample can end up representing a single community, dormitory, or employer.

Verification: Four Layers, Not One Questionnaire

A common mistake is assuming that eligibility can be checked with a single screening question. People may misremember details. They may embellish slightly. Or they simply may not understand why a particular criterion matters — and answer accordingly.

We build verification as a system of several independent layers, each checking something different.

Before the interview — verification through the recruitment environment: cross-checking data from different sources (profile, hiring conversation, screening responses), income logic through questions about schedule and pay structure, employment confirmation through a description of a typical working day. When we find someone through a platform, some of the verification is already done by the platform itself.

During the interview — active monitoring by the interviewer: chronological logic of events, cause-and-effect relationships in the description of behaviour, internal consistency of answers across different stages of the conversation. If something doesn't add up, the interviewer notices and checks carefully.

After the interview — review of the recording, consistency check of the respondent profile, flagging of questionable cases.

Behavioural verification — a separate and important layer: we ask the respondent to walk through a specific recent transaction or event in detail. This is the best indicator of genuine experience — it cannot be convincingly fabricated without that experience.

The principle we operate by: it is better to exclude one or two interviews than to retain unreliable data in the sample.

Interviews: Why Trust Matters More Than Protocol

On sensitive topics — financial behaviour, family circumstances, relationships with employers — a direct question almost always produces a "safe" answer. People know what they're supposed to say to a researcher. And they say it.

To get a real answer, you first need to remove the sense of being evaluated. We start with facts: what exactly happened, when, where, how. A specific event. A specific action. Only then — why, how they felt, what mattered. This transition from facts to motivations is the most valuable part of an in-depth interview, and it only works when the respondent doesn't feel like they're being tested.

The second key element is the native interviewer. And this is not just about language.

Many audiences in the UAE — migrant workers, people from closed national or professional communities — live within fairly insular social circles. Trust inside the circle is high. Trust towards an outsider is zero by default.

A foreign researcher arriving with questions about money, family, an employer, or financial practices is not merely a stranger. They are a potential threat: to status, to employment, sometimes to documentation. People sense this instantly — and close off just as instantly. An interview may formally take place; answers will technically be given. But they will be the "right" answers, not the real ones.

An interviewer who is culturally close to the audience — who speaks the same language, understands the context from the inside, shares a similar lived experience — changes the very nature of the conversation. It is no longer research; it is a conversation between people who belong to the same world. That is the environment in which people say what they actually think and actually do.

This is why we don't simply "hire a translator." We look for someone who is genuinely part of the environment they're working in — with real qualitative interviewing experience, language proficiency, and cultural understanding of the audience.

Before the fieldwork begins — mandatory calibration: a pilot interview, a debrief with the team, alignment on probing depth, terminology, and conversation structure. The pilot is not included in the final sample unless explicitly agreed otherwise.

Go Into the Field

One of the formats we include in projects when the client is not based in the UAE — and something we regularly do ourselves when we travel on a business mission to another country. A few days: participation in interviews, field observation, live debriefs after each session, immersion in the context — depending on the audience.

Teams that have been through the field stage personally make subsequent product and strategic decisions with a fundamentally different level of confidence. Not because they have more data. Because they have context.

What This Means for Entering the UAE Market

When a company enters the UAE market, research is not an optional stage. It is the foundation on which product hypotheses, GTM strategy, and decisions about partners and channels are built.

But not all research is equal. If your target audience is not senior executives or technology entrepreneurs, but people working in the real economy and living in real everyday circumstances, standard tools will give you data — but not understanding.

Understanding comes through access to the environment. Through trust. Through methodological control at every step — not as a checklist, but as a working principle. This is why we build recruitment through live environments, not panels. This is why validation is a system, not a question in a form. And this is why an interviewer who culturally understands the audience is worth more than any expensive transcription tool.

On Cost — Honestly

This kind of research costs more than a standard brief placed with a local agency or a research firm from India, Pakistan, or the Philippines.

There are several reasons. The approach itself is complex. Multi-channel recruitment is labour-intensive. A native interviewer with genuine field experience costs more than a moderator pulled from a database. Multi-layer verification takes time. And a principled refusal to use panels means every respondent is live work, not a row in a database.

But the difference is not only in price — it is in the nature of the result. Interpreting the data, understanding what lies behind it, translating findings into product decisions or a GTM strategy: this is a different level of work, and it requires a different type of thinking.

There is one more point that often gets overlooked. The cultural layer matters not only at the level of interviewer and respondent. It matters just as much at the level of team and client. When the research is led by a team with a European or Russian business background, and the client is a company with the same decision-making logic, there is a shared language: how hypotheses are framed, how data is interpreted, what counts as sufficient grounds for a decision and what does not. This is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of whether the research actually influences decisions. Which is the whole point.
